FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

If you're unable to find the information you're looking for on our website, please feel free to reach out and inquire within!

Q - How long do I have to wait to book a spay after my pet has her heat?
A - Cats 2-4 weeks post heat. Dogs 2 months post heat

Q - What vaccines do you offer at your wellness clinic?
A - Dogs - DA2PP, Rabies, Bordetella, and Leptospirosis. Cats - FVRCP, Rabies

Q - I booked an appointment but I am getting another email reminding me to be there at a different time, why?
A - All of our admits are done all at once and discharges as well. You booked a reservation for your pet that day, not an appointment time. There are a certain number of open slots per day that can be booked per species and per weight categories. Everyone arrives in the morning to drop their pets off for the day, surgery is completed all day on approximately 20-28 patients, and then all at once they are discharged at the end of the day.

Admit time
Dogs 7:30am, Cats 8:00am

Discharge time
Dogs 5:00pm, Cats 5:30pm

Q - My pet does not have an up to date rabies vaccine, can I get this at the time of surgery?
A - Yes

Q - I am having trouble booking online - now what?
A - please email your booking details to us and we can manually make you a file and an appointment

Q - What hours are you open?
A - We are only open when we have a veterinarian booked for the day. This varies based off the veterinarians own private schedule. All of our vets work full time at private clinics and come to us part time to help in surgery and perform wellness appointments. We typically are open on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and the occasional Thursday and Friday. If you need something after hours, please email us, the RVT's will respond within the day.

Q - Are the SPCA and the Clinic the same place?
A - We are located within the same building but are separate facilities, staffed with separate staff, and have separate billing and computer filing systems. If you have any questions regarding the clinic, please email us at technician@forteriespca.ca.

Q - What is the recovery period for a spay or neuter?
A - Cats recover rather quickly due to their size and incision, within 5-10 days. Larger dogs require more time and usually sedation after surgery to ensure they remain still and calm during recovery, this typically is a 10-14 day period. Small dogs recover quickly as well as long as they don't overdo it with activity after surgery.

Q - Why does my pet have to receive a rabies vaccination, I don't want one.
A - It's the federal government law that all domesticated animals receive a rabies vaccination. The fine for this through Animal Control is $250. The vaccine is $35. Rabies without a vaccination is a death sentence for your pet (and yourself) should it become infected. Better safe than sorry :)

Q - My cat has fleas, why is treatment so expensive?
A - Cats with fleas require 3 consecutive monthly doses of deworming to kill the entire lifecycle of the flea. Fleas also come hand in hand with tapeworms. Our dewormer has deworming for tapeworms as well.

Q - Can I pick up my pet early from surgery?
A - No, not unless your pet is having a hard time adjusting to the kennel environment. Then we will call you and ask they be picked up early.

Q - Why are your prices so low? Do you compromise on care?
A - We are a not-for-profit charity. Any money that is made goes to pay the staff, purchase new equipment, and offer improved services to the public. Your pet will receive the exact same service here at the clinic as they would in a private small animal clinic. They all receive fluids during surgery, 5 days post op pain control, sedation, a warm comfortable bed for recovery, classical music in a dimly lit room, and RVT's performing the induction, anesthesia, and recovery. We are a CVO accredited facility and practice Fear Free methods.

All surgeries are performed at the discretion of the veterinarian on the morning of surgery. If your pet would benefit from fear free sedation prior to their arrival please let us know. If your pet has never been crated before, is reactive to other dogs, cats, is fearful of physical examinations and/or restraint, please request the fear free medication.
